Photography Workshop Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye Photography Workshop is not a fixed program. It is resulting in possible changes throughout the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, the itinerary below is an overview of what to expect during our 7-day workshop. Please remember the weather is out of our control, the Isle of Skye is famous for the crazy weather, but with perfect condition we could capture the Northern Lights on the Isle of Skye.

Day 1 – Edinburgh – Isle of Skye

This morning we will depart Edinburgh mid morning after a filling  breakfast. On our way to the Isle of Skye we will be making multiple stops for photography and the beautiful Scottish scenery.

To break up the trip we will not head directly for the Isle of Skye, here we will see the beauty that Scotland has to offer. However we will arrive at our accommodation in time to unwind, unpack and relax.

In the late afternoon we will be heading out for our first Sunset location.

Day 2 – Isle Of Skye

Our first sunrise shoot onthe Isle of Skye will be taken a Loch Fada. A perfect way to capture the Old Man of Storr, before later in the week making the hike up for Sunrise.

During the day we will be doing some location scouting for future image to make sure we get the best results.

Sunset will take us to one of the most famous castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle. This is a short drive off the Isle of Skye. On the way we will stop for dinner to eat and hopefully get a chance to photography the famous Scottish Highland Cow.

Day 3 – Isle Of Skye

Firstly, an early start for today’s sunrise with a 45min to 1-hour walk to the Old Man of Storr. Here we will focus on how to achieve scale in our landscape photography, implementing our previous skills of working with natural light in our images, but now we’ll take it to the next level.

During the day we will visit 2 locations the fairy pools and Talkiser beach. At both places, we will centre our attention to foreground interest and focus stacking a vital aspect of landscape photography. Two very important aspects that’ll enhance your photography abilities.

After a long day of photography we will have an afternoon off – depending on weather conditions.

Day 4 – Isle Of Skye

The beautiful Neist Point with be our Sunset location. We will arrive here hours before sunset as there are multiple compositions to explore.

The cape of Neist Point has multiple vantage points to photography. Therefore we will work hard to capture multiple images from this location.

Please Note: Walking will be done a mixed terrain, you can stay at the top vantage point if you’re unable to hike down.

Day 5 – Isle Of Skye

A morning off to rest and relax for an entire afternoon out photography. This will depend on the weather if we’ve been out photographing the night skies or the Northern Lights.

Finally, our sunset location of Elgol will allow us to gather all our new skills of focus stacking, lighting, exposure and filters to execute it all together.

Day 6 – Isle of Skye – Edinburgh

Our last sunrise shoot on the Isle of Skye will take us to one of the most iconic viewpoints in Scotland – The Quiraing.

In the meantime, lighting will drastically change the landscape for this sunrise shoot. Therefore, multiple compositions are available from this location using different focal lengths as the morning light changes. So once again, working again with filters or exposure bracketing to capture the perfect image.

In the afternoon, we will venture through the Glencoe region for more stunning sights before returning to Edinburgh.

Day 7 – Edinburgh

Today we will depart Scotland at our scheduled flight time. Breakfast will be supplied at the hotel, unless you have an extremely early flight. Transport to the Edinburgh airport is extremely easy with affordable public transport, assistance can be provided by myself or the hotel staff.

Alternative travel plans such as additional days in Glasgow & Edinburgh after the trip can be arranged; please let me know prior to departure.

I attended the private winter Slovenia tour. I didn't need a photography teacher but wanted a local guide that... understands the needs of landscape photography, hence the choice of a photography tour. I am very glad I choice Matthew. He was punctual and patient (we drove to the same locations several times during the short tour as per my request). The tour was organized perfectly. Will definitely think on taking future tours with him.read more

I joined Matthew Storer and Maurice van den Boogaard in December 2019 to Tromso, Norway. With the hopes of capturing... the nothern lights for myself.I had basic photography knowlegde about shutterspeed, aperture ISO settings and 4-5 years experience with ''average holliday shots'' with occesionaly a picture that I might really like. So, I borrowed a tripod, got myself a wide-angle F2.8 lens and for the first time put the camara in manual. Matthew has a very calm, easy to understand way of teaching, and gives you advice, one step at the time for the current situation. He does this without forcing you to do things a certain way and is also truely interested what you want to accomplish as a photographer. I must admit, that due to the short-daylight hours, freezing temperatures and ofcourse waiting for the best northern light conditions. (And dispite the extra Sami experience) There are a few dull afternoons/evenings, Matthew Storer made great use of this time, to teach the basics of post-production edditing. So no time wasted there and one very large bonus. Also his post-tour support for eddition pictures is simply amazing and I think its likely that I will try one of his other landscape photography courses in the future. Thank you!read more

Last December I went to Tromsø with Matt and Surviking for a low-light photography tour, hoping to catch the northern... lights. While patiently waiting for the lights, we visited many great locations to practice the skills required to capture them, and then spent some time learning more about post-production to get the most out of our images. I learnt so many post-production tricks that I know I will use to better my photography in the future. This was mainly due to Matt's endless patience in answering my questions and his commitment to making sure I learnt as much as I could in such a short period of time. His skills are evident when he answers any photography related question and as a result, I'd recommend the trip to anyone wanting to improve their night photography skills (you might even see the northern lights on the way)! It was truly wonderful, thank you.read more

I attended the Northern Lights tour to Tromso last December. 7 years ago I did a basic photography course, so I already... knew a few things about photography. But this was a special trip for shooting in low light. I have learned a lot. How do I use the ISO, the aperture, shutter speed and how do I determine the best composition. But also a lot about post-processing (the magic word of the tour😄). Matthew was a great teacher and gave me a lot of information to take home and learn. Thank you very much!read more

Having attended one of Matthew’s photography tours in Slovenia, I can’t recommend them highly enough. Throughout... the tour, Matthew was very professional and patient, a great teacher with a lot of knowledge and a passion for teaching. With the knowledge and experience gained through the tour, the change within my own photography has been massive, which will be beneficial going forward. As for the locations visited on the tour, each location was stunning and not only provide many different images but also shows just how incredible Slovenia really is. Even the accommodation that Matthew provided during the tour was superb and couldn’t have asked for anywhere better. Overall an amazing experience and worth all the 5 stars and more.I certainly aim to join Matthew on another tour in the future!read more
